MTEL Test Centers Map

Passing scores on one or more Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) are required to qualify for a teaching license in Massachusetts. All MTELs are computer-based exams that must be taken at a Pearson VUE test center. The map shows the locations on Pearson VUE test centers in Massachusetts where the MTEL is available.

There are only four test centers in the 413 area code, one on Cape Cod and one in the northwest/northshore area outside of Route 128. Not exactly equitable access for a diverse population.

Candidates seeking to qualify for a Massachusetts educator license must travel to test centers that can be over an hour away by private car. Most test centers are not accessible by public transportation and several do not have free parking available to test takers. Many undergraduate programs require candidates to obtain a passing score on at least one MTEL exam prior to being fully admitted in the educator preparation program.

Getting there is only half the battle. Test fees and licensure fees can add up quickly.

The cost to register for each MTEL varies from $76- $166. Some license fields may require passing scores on five MTELs plus a $100 license application fee.

Total cost for a high-demand Teacher of Moderate Disabilities (Special Education) license:

Communications and Literacy MTEL $112
Foundations of Reading MTEL $139
General Curriculum Multi-Subject MTEL $94
General Curriculum Math Subtest MTEL $94
Sheltered English Immersion MTEL $166
License Application Fee $100

Total Licensing Fees: $705 plus transportation costs, parking, lost wages, childcare, etc. Oh, and a Bachelor’s degree.
