Baker & Education Funding FY19

Early budget recommendations from Beacon Hill have cuts for education programs across the Commonwealth.

On Wednesday, Governor Charlie Baker released his $40.9 billion FY19 budget proposal.  A detailed overview of his proposal, including a breakdown of education-related line-items, can be accessed on the Massachusetts Teachers Association website by clicking here.

Throughout the budget there are a number of proposals of concern to the MTA, including: paltry funding increases across all levels of education; severe under-funding of charter school tuition reimbursement; potential elimination of key services to urban districts, and restrictions on the accrual of sick time.

Now that Baker’s spending package has been introduced, the next step in the budget process is for the House Ways & Means Committee to review his recommendations before releasing its own plan in the spring.
