Licensure Options for School Year 2021-22

Many of the temporary provisions around employment and licensure adopted in 2020 will continue into the 2021-22 school year. Check out our updated Check List guides for licensure.

The Center for Education Policy and Practice has revised the Check List guides for both the academic and vocational technical educator licensure requirements. These updated guides include direct links to resources from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Full PDF versions are available at the end of this post.

The Emergency License will continue to be valid into the 2021-22 school year for educators who have not yet completed the requirements for a standard license. Many educators are struggling to complete license requirements as testing options for both the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) and the Vocational Technical Teacher Testing Program are still under COVID-19 restrictions. DESE has not yet published any alternative options for MTEL test requirements.

For educators who did not advance or renew an expired license after March 18, 2020, a deadline of July 31, 2021 has been set by the Commissioner. Links are included in the Check List documents and you can read more about this deadline here.
