Interested teacher preparation in the area of reading? DESE is seeking seeking feedback on the revised draft of the Early Literacy Program Approval Criteria through November 27, 2023 December 13, 2023.
As part of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s investments in improving instruction in language and literacy in early grades, the Office of Educator Preparation is updating the requirements. Teacher licensure programs that are approved to train teachers for grades PreK-6 (including Early Childhood and Elementary) as well as certain special education licenses will need to demonstrated their coursework, field experiences and assessments include effective strategies and subject matter knowledge related to content knowledge and pedagogical skills required for teaching early literacy in grades PK-3.
The Early Literary in Educator Preparation initiatives are part of the statewide Mass Literacy to update and invest in reading and literacy programs.
Do these proposed requirements for programs translate to effective preparation for teachers? Or are they missing something that you wish you learned in your preparation program? Take a look at draft requirements and submit your comments to DESE.
