Four organizations started the process to open a new charter school as part of the 2021-22 application cycle. New Bedford, Newton and Worcester are the potential homes for new charter schools.

Letters of intent to submit a prospectus to open a Commonwealth Charter School were due on July 30, 2021. Four organizations submitted letters on intent to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The proposed schools would be located in three Massachusetts communities.

The next steps for charter school applicants is to submit a more detailed Initial Application to DESE by August 16, 2021. A public hearing process through DESE, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the host communities would be required before the final recommendation is issued.
